| Regulation Change to Monitor Lead in Drinking Water |
| Gananoque |
| 3/12/2010 |
| The Ministry of the Environment amended Ontario Regulation 170/03 Drinking-Water Systems for lead monitoring and testing. In response, the Town of Gananoque will be conducting a lead sampling program between December 15th 2009 to April 15th 2010 and again on June 15th, 2010 to October 15th, 2010.
This amendment to O. Reg 170/03 makes it mandatory for our Town to: - Regularly sample and test for lead at 40 private residences, 4 non private facilities and 8 distribution system sites
- Notify the home and facility occupants of the results at their taps from their plumbing, and,
- To take corrective action in municipally owned systems with elevated lead levels, if any.
The Town of Gananoque is asking residents to volunteer for the lead testing program. In order to ensure that the best representative sample is collected, sampling will be completed by a Licensed Operator employed by the Town: - Samples will be taken from the kitchen tap, or if no kitchen, at the tap most frequently used for human consumption;
- The sampling location water line will be flushed for 5 minutes, and then allowed to stand undisturbed for 30 minutes.
- At the end of the 30 minutes 3 samples will be collected for analysis.
There is no charge for sampling done under the requirements of Ontario Regulation 170/03. However, should your residence not be selected for sampling under this regulation and you still wish to have your plumbing sampled it will be the home owners responsibility. If you are interested in volunteering for this testing program, please contact the Town of Gananoque Public Works, Culture and Recreation Department at (613)382-4360 extension 112. You’ll be asked to leave a message with your name, address and daytime phone number. A licensed operator will return your call to arrange an appointment.
Your cooperation in keeping our water safe is appreciated. |
